A beautiful western Virginia outdoor retreat, Smith Mountain Lake State Park sits beside the second-largest freshwater lake in the state, formed after a dam was built in the 1960s. The state park is a key gateway to fishing and boating activities on the lake, as well as offering 13 different hiking trails for visitors to use to explore the natural beauty of the land. A tents-only campground holds 50 different sites for guests and there are also 20 cabins available for reservation that offer more modern amenities. During the summer, a 500-foot-long beach is a great place for children and families to play. Sitting about 40 miles by car southeast of Roanoke, the secluded park is still quite popular during the summer so reserving a spot in advance is advisable.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee: Vehicles $3 - $4. Swimming fee: $2 - $4. Boat launch and overnight rates vary, check website for details.
